Description: Georgia artist Roger Ivens, known popularly as Ab the Flagman, has made a reputation for himself by creating large-scale wooden flag assemblages. As a child, his father's flag-draped coffin provided early inspiration for what would become his trademark subject.
In addition to the three-dimensional flags, Ab carves other enduring images of American culture, like eagles, the Statue of Liberty, and street scenes that feature musicians.
The show includes work inspired by his visit to Florida this year. Surfers, palm trees, ocean piers, and ospreys are finding their way into his repertoire as a reflection of his surroundings.
Ab's work is found in numerous public and private collections, including the House of Blues, the Mennello Museum of American Art, the Orlando Shakespeare Theater, and the Orlando Chamber of Commerce. He was commissioned by the Atlanta Olympic Committee to make several large scale flags to hang in the Olympic Village.
