Meet artist, Josh Cote, and view his twisted oversized wire works at the opening reception of Down the Rabbit Hole hosted by Jeanine Taylor Folk Art on Saturday, March 17th. Cote has made the trip down from his mountain cabin in North Carolina to bring Downtown Sanford an eyeful of wire sculptures depicting seven feet tall bike riding rabbits, the inner workings of Houdini’s book of tricks, and upside down bats hanging from rafters.
Cote explains, “Using negative space, combined with the linear nature of the wire, the finished work is much like a pen and ink drawing in sculptural form.”
Rabbits are a central muse to Cote. Born into a family of traveling artists, Cote moved around from town to town without taking roots in any one place. It was at the age of seven years old when his lifelong friend, Peter the stuffed rabbit, was left behind in the closet of the family’s Vermont home. From that day forward, Cote’s longing for his lost friend has persisted and lends fuel to his art.
