About the Event
Jeanine Taylor Folk Art is honored to announce the opening reception of a show decades in the making. Cosmic Traveler – A Kurt Zimmerman Retrospective will showcase works from the late visionary abstract expressionist painter from Cocoa Beach, Florida. His work teems with galvanized hues, energetic brushstrokes and a mysterious air of otherworldly knowledge.
An emigrant of Germany, Zimmerman grew up in New York State and enlisted in the army after high school. He performed bombing missions over his homeland during World War II that deeply affected his emotional health. He returned to the U.S. and was hired to work on the Apollo project for General Electric. More stress and depression lead him to quit his job and turn to art for therapy.
“My work is a direct expression of entities in contact with me from different dimensions. By bringing them into this world through my art, I hope to make viewers aware of the greater dimensionality of life—a view very different from the normal day to day reality we perceive.”
Kurt Zimmerman left this world in September of 2017 and this retrospective will be the first of its kind since his passing. The artist’s estate is being handled by his beloved daughter, Celeste Danforth, who will be present for the opening reception and art sale. Professor Emerita Dr. Kristin Congdon will offer recollections and remarks at 7 p.m.
Zimmerman’s work has been shown at the Henry Boxer Gallery in London and numerous national and international galleries. His work is included in the City of Orlando’s permanent collection and the collection of the Mennello Museum of American Art. He is included in several art reference books including Just Above the Water, Florida Folk Art by Kristin G. Congdon and Tina Bucuvalas.
