About the Event
Usher in the summer with a brand-new workshop from Melissa Menzer! The Memory Heirloom Workshop is inspired by the centuries old African American tradition of Memory Jugs – vessels adorned with jewelry, toys, watches and other small objects meant to commemorate a person, event or theme. Participants will get the chance to create their own Memory Heirloom featuring a hand sculpted head atop an antique base.
Guests are strongly encouraged to choose a subject of great importance (person, pet, life event, favorite movie, alma mater, etc.) and bring their own special mementos to include in the assemblage. As usual, Melissa will be bringing her trove of oddities to help adorn students’ sculptures. Each participant will have a completed project by the end of the workshop.
Classes are limited to ten people per session. Melissa will provide one on one and group instruction throughout the day. Students will finish the class with a completed project and the knowledge to continue creating at home.
Melissa’s antique assemblages rose to acclaim several years ago at the Mennello Museum of American Art in Orlando. She is the daughter of antique dealers from the Washington DC area and has worked in the business throughout her life, owning several booths in antique malls throughout central Florida.
